This is what the comet looked like this morning using the 0.8m Schulman Telescope at the UA Skycenter atop Mount Lemmon (AZ): http://skycenter.arizona.edu/gallery/SolarSystems/ison_10082013 I am certain more images of this will be coming out shortly as it increases in brightness during its dive towards the Sun. Here is hoping it survives that rendezvous and emerges as something spectacular on the other side!

Great photo!

Photographically, this will likely be the best comet in some years. Already a classic comet shape is coming into view. Your photo reveals the bright ion tail. Soon we should be able to see a dust tail, curved in the shape of the comets orbit.

You guys are probably aware of all the speculations about ISON popping out everywhere on the internet, claiming that Mars somehow interacted with the comet and paraphrasing, lit up, acquired a coma and a tail, or that it was literally hit by ISON and destroyed. Most claims derived from the videos uploaded by James McCanney on YouTube.
The timing of the US government shutdown which paralyzed NASA activities, as well as the total lack of updated images of Mars and ISON by official governmental agencies and mainstream astronomers, is making things worse and giving a lot of room to conspiracy theories.

Can any of you guys who are regularly posting images of ISON up here, please upload some zoomed image of Mars, or anything else that help clarifying these claims??? Thnks in advance!

Astromazzo - Im not sure why your comments are deleted maybe its because you feel the need to call any photo you dont like (and that someone out there has worked really hard on) FAKE. If you dont like a photo, thats fine just move on, you dont need say negative things about the ones that arent to your taste. Or compare ones that you do like with ones that you dont.

What you need to remember is that all astrophotography, indeed all astronomy (with optical instruments) results in a fake image. Whether we use optics to see something we couldnt otherwise see, or we use a long exposure to capture more light than our eyes can, the resulting images will always be unnatural. Optics, long exposures and even stacking can be used to give to the viewer a perfected view of an object or phenomenon. They are not what your eye would see, but that doesnt make them faked. Unless you are adding colours or strange effects in photoshop then surely the image is the image.

Stacking many images together to bring out the feint light and subtle colours that has been lost over the vast distance doesnt make it a forgery.

Go get me a picture from 100km away from the surface of ISON and we can compare how fake this looks. ;o)

I know both, scientific and aesthetic. And I also know how to show respect to people and what they have done with their time while imaging.
The question is, is why do you feel the need to call peoples images fake on almost every post?
Are you on a mission to purge?
Its not going to happen on this site other than perhaps your messages getting deleted.
Can you just not say something if it offends?

Then you are mistaken if you think this is purely a scientific website, and are disappointed in this website on your level of thought.

So if one is to pay attention on how to publish them, we should all, for your sake, post the scientific version for astromazzo, in the just for you gallery, and then the unscientific version for all us other idiots who want to post FAKE images (according to you), in the non existent fake images gallery section, whereas you will not feel the desire to over critique.

You should really take that idea up with the moderator.

For the record, the admins never delete comments unless theres profanity. However, if comments receive a certain number of down votes, then the comments are automatically purged. In this way, we leave it completely up to the users.

Fantastic Photo! I estimate the comet to brighten to -6.5 to -7.0 at closest to the sun. It will be about -4 magnitude for Evening observers in the Northern Americas just North West of the sun about 5-7 degrees.

If this comet gets as bright as the moon I will be surprised. Nonetheless when near Christmas at its closest to Earth it will be a magnitude 5.0 which should be nice to see!
