Details:
We had an appearance of STEVE during the Kp5 show on August 17-18, 2026. This was from southern Alberta, Canada at latitude 51ยบ N. STEVE = Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. It is not an aurora per se but is a stream of hot glowing gas flowing horizontally from east to west created during a geomagnetic storm, usually of Kp5 level, which was the case this night. STEVE first appeared as grey arc in the southeast then moved westward across the southern sky and brightened to take on his usual mauve and white hues. He then faded to a diffuse red band in the southwest. But as that happened a row of green picket fence fingers appeared to the southeast and marched westward along the same track where STEVE had been but farther south. The appearance of STEVE followed by the fingers was from 11:15 pm MDT to about 12:05 am, Aug 17-18. Images with a Nikon Z8 and 7Artisans 10mm full-frame fish-eye lens.
