These are a wide-angle views from northern Spain of the total eclipse of the Sun of August 12, 2026 in the twilight sky. They show the sky at: — "second contact," as the lunar shadow (moving from north to south, or right to left here) first touches the Sun as totality begins; — at mid-totality, in versions with and without labels and the lines for the ecliptic and lunar orbit showing their intersection at the eclipse; — and at "third contact," as the lunar shadow edge departs the Sun and totality ends with a diamond ring effect. At this eclipse the low altitude of the Sun (it was 8º high) amid dust and haze made the corona appear quite yellow. To the far upper left is the planet Venus. It was near its greatest elongation (angular separation) about 45º east of the Sun, and visible well before and after totality. The location was the Bodegas Nabal winery near the town of Gumiel de Izan east of Valladolid and south of Burgos, in the region of Castile Y Leon. The site was selected by the tour company Capture the Atlas as the exclusive private venue for the group of 100 eclipse enthusiasts I was privileged to be with, serving as one their expert instructors. Technical: All are single exposures (1/2 to 1.3 seconds) at f/2.8 with the Canon RF15-35mm lens at 15mm on the Canon Ra at ISO 200. Each is a frame from a 520-frame time-lapse sequence of the shadow motion across the sky, shot with Auto Exposure.
