Everyone who had the luck to witness totality in person knows very well that pictures don't quite make justice of what a human eye can actually see. The sudden gloom in the umbra, the incredible dynamic range of the corona, the somehow uncanny darkness of the scene of its own unique nature, the tridimensionality of the sight on a cosmic scale. I arrived from Udine, Italy the day before; my friend Francesco reached me from Milan. On August 12th, after an exquisite lunch in Lerma, we moved by car and decided for a less crowded area. After some hours of search we had the luck of seeing the eclipse in a parched rural landscape, hundreds of meters if not kilometers away from any other human being, on the top of a strikingly suggestive hill with a completely open horizon at West, between the villages of Pineda Trasmonte and Fontioso in the province of Burgos, Castilla y Leon. This photo is the best I can do from the few shots I took to represent at least some of the features of this eclipse, mainly the rather warm tone of the corona, being the Sun only 8° above horizon at our location, and the smooth yet sharp brushstrokes of the pretty wide prominences. The 1'45" flew away leaving an eternal trace in our mind.
Nikon D600, 70-200 mm f/2.8 with 2x converter on tripod, single exposure of 1" with f/8 at ISO 100, color and light correction to the best of my memory with only a slightly darker background to render more accurately the farther details of the corona.
