Yesterday morning I had a look at Saturn and the view was magnificent. At this time of year, it’s high in the south only at dawn, so I watched it until the sky turned blue, with the Sun still below the horizon.
Set against the pale sky, its colours were much more subdued, but the image was crystal clear even at 380x. You could make out the Cassini Division, the globe’s shadow on the ring and the ring’s faint shadow on the globe, just as it appears in this video, filmed by holding my smartphone close to my 18-inch Stargate Dobsonian telescope with a 3x zoom.
