Details:
SN 2026kie is a Type Ic supernova located in the constellation Leo, positioned at celestial coordinates RA 10h 52m 36s and Dec +22° 55' 54". It was first discovered on April 22, 2026, by the automated ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) sky survey at an initial discovery magnitude of 18.08. The exploding star is hosted within NGC 3437, a barred spiral galaxy situated roughly 79 million light-years away from Earth. While early spectroscopic evaluations initially flagged the transient event as a Type Ib, follow-up re-classification by projects like ePESSTO+ quickly confirmed it to be a Type Ic supernova, indicating a stripped-envelope core collapse from a massive progenitor star that lost its outer layers of hydrogen and helium prior to detonation. Since its spring discovery, the supernova has brightened significantly, peaking at an apparent magnitude of approximately 15.5. My estimate taken on June 3, 2026 shows it currently at magnitude 15.7.
