Details:
This substorm appeared on March 13 at ~00:30 EDST over New York and lasted a few minutes. HP 40, Kp 4. I was able to catch this only thanks to watching GOES magnetometers and getting on location just in time to take this shot. It looks like we will have some nice conditions tonight and possibly tomorrow as we are just getting into a CIR. I would like to encourage those living perhaps as far as 38N, to give it a shot tonight. Clear sky beats latitude tonight and tomorrow.
This is a 13 sec exposure at 40 mm (24-70 f2.8 lens), ISO 1600. Such distant displays morph slowly, and it is better to expose longer to get more columns in one shot when the substorm is not as dense with columns. The patches of light on the horizon is light pollution, which looks a lot worse in a zoomed image such as this one. If you squint, you will see some hints of pink also to the left and right of the columns.
