There is a lot of stuff up there! I was looking at the “Input Satellites” function in The Sky X Professional (TSX) to check on the location of the ISS and must have inadvertently also ticked the “Active Geosynchronous – Communication Satellites” Check Box. When I then looked at TheSky Chart I saw all these objects clustered in groups along the Celestial Equator, so decided to slew over to a cluster and grab a 10 sec exposure, tracking on a satellite at a Custom Rate in TSX. This ensures that the object would remain stationary in the FOV whilst the stars trailed. After the exposure finished, I saw that I had recorded 5 satellites amongst the star trails, so kicked off a 60 sec exposure. I was able to determine details of the 5 satellites which were Japanese, managed by the Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT), a Japanese corporation established in April 1993 to procure, manage and lease transponders on communications satellites. You never know who is watching until you look up… Dennis.
