Details:
After observing Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS with the Gemini Observatory last week when we ran a "Shadow the Scientist" session that gave the public a look, I was able to view the special comet again with a 22-inch Dobsonian from Frazier Park, just north of Los Angeles. My image was shot with a Vaonis Vespera II, which helped us match the live star field and locate it through the Dobsonian. While it may not be the most beautiful object we can see through a telescope, witnessing a comet that has formed in another solar system and likely traveled through the galaxy for billions of years with a wooden box and a few mirrors, was an indescribable feeling. I urge anyone with access to moderately dark skies and a large scope to try and find it during the second half of the night. This is an opportunity to seek out your local astronomical societies. Anyone without a scope can watch the Shadow the Scientist replay to see this fascinating stranger, which shows properties similar to comets found in our solar system.
