Details:
While a destructive supercell was passing to the east of my location in suburban Brisbane, I setup my iPhone 16 Pro on a tripod and was taking shots of the lightning using the Live Photo feature. While reviewing the short videos to find the best lightning frame to set as key photo, I noticed the last frame picked up a red sprite above the storm. I have known of these phenomena but have never thought I would ever capture one. There are a lot of factors that make me so incredibly lucky to jag this image: Sprites typically last 10 milliseconds; Live Photo captures at 15 frames per second; if I was faster with my reaction time pressing the button I would have missed it; if I was slower with my reaction time I might not have noticed the brief flash in my review. It seems it was only that the clip ended with the sprite hanging over the storm that I noticed it. I feel very privileged.
