Details:
Missed much of the first wave of the Veterans Day storm but the much anticipated, larger CME was still on the way so we thought. No news was good news. The magnetometers were all relatively quiet through the afternoon and, selfishly that meant we in North America would receive the greatest benefit of the impact after sundown. Then, it seemed there may have been a cannibal situation and what we got 11/11 was what we were going to get! No matter, gathered the gear and made the 90 mile trek up to Jewell Hollow overlook in SNP. As the sun set, gusty winds and dropping temps weren’t encouraging. Nor was the absence of any hint of color on the northern horizon. A couple hours passed and thoughts of a bail out were considered when a pink blush began to appear just above the distant mountain as app alarms sounded.. Soon all thoughts of abandoning ship evaporated as the light show began. Seemed to be three substorms over the period between about 7:30 EST and Midnight when things subsided for the evening. Nowhere near as vivid as the night before, but then, the night before was mostly clouds in Northern Virginia.
Images made with a Canon R5 alternating between an EF 24-70 2.8 zoom and an EF 14mm prime. See metadata for settings.
As the evening progressed the setting Milky Way began to photobomb the scene adding some frosting for the cake.
