Details:
I have seen bright aurora displays, but last night topped everything. For the first time, I took images without night mode. No long exposure, no tripod. Just standard capture at 1/15th of a second. Granted, the longer exposures I took were better exposed and revealed even more color, but I am posting these images to proof a point: Auroras can be so bright, that long exposures become unnecessary. What had caused this? The solar wind was already fast (up to 800 km/s) and the magnetic field had turned south when several large spikes in the particle density appeared. Each spike cause a brightening and quickening of the display.
