Details:
This is the fiery re-entry of a satellite across the northern sky, and above an arc of aurora. The site is the Whispering Pines Camp in the Cypress Hills of southeastern Alberta, and during the annual Southern Alberta Star Party. So lots of amateur astronomers enjoyed the view of the slowly-moving trail of light with sparkles of bits breaking off the satellite. The satellite was moving from west to east (left to right here) and passed through the Big Dipper.
This was just after midnight, MDT on September 22/23, 2025. The satellite took about a minute to traverse the sky. It might have been a Starlink, as they do outnumber all other satellites.
Technical:
This is a single 15-second exposure at f/2 with the Nikkor 20mm lens on the Nikon Z8 at ISO 800.
