Named in honor of François-Marie Arouet (1694–1778), known as Voltaire, who was a French historian and writer of essays and philosophical treatises during the Age of Enlightenment, known for his sharp intelligence and for being an early and courageous advocate for human rights and free speech.
He frequently criticized the dogmas of the Catholic Church and French institutions
