I imaged this double rainbow from my Manorville, NY backyard at 7:47pm EST on 05-24-25. I need to put something away in my large shed on the West side of my property that was left on the lawn, and I did not want to get wet. I was feeling light raindrops at that to. As I turned to walk out of my shed, I looked to the Eastern sky. There it was in all its magnificent, colorful glory. So I got out my camera and took this image. Trust me when I say this picture looked nothing like what I was able to see with my own eyes.
Please Note: A double rainbow occurs when sunlight is reflected twice within a raindrop, creating a secondary, fainter rainbow above the primary one. The secondary rainbow has a reversed color sequence compared to the primary rainbow, with red on the inside and violet on the outside. The dark band between the two rainbows is called Alexander's band.
Double rainbows, while not as common as single rainbows, are not exceptionally rare. They are more likely to appear when the sun is low in the sky, such as early in the morning or late in the afternoon. However, they are less frequent than single rainbows because they require a double reflection of light within the water droplets.
