These southern lights appeared unexpectedly on a few images I took last night before moonrise in the Australian bush, where I'm observing with my good friend Timo Karhula. If we had known of the lights, I suspect they would have been visible with the naked eye.
In the lower sky, greenish airglow bands are visible to about 30 degree altitude, as they slowly moved up from the horizon and disappeared. SMC and LMC are seen through the airglow. In the central Milky Way, the reddish Eta Carinae nebula dominates, and the purplish Gum nebula is faintly seen to the top right.
It was a fantastic, warm, dry and calm night with near perfect transparency.
The picture was taken 2025 March 24 at 15:57 UT. 30 sec exposure with an astromodified Canon 6D and a Samyang 14 mm XP @f/4.
