Details:
On February 28, 2025, at 17:45 local time, I captured these images of an unusual cloud over Coyhaique, Chile, looking west-northwest. The cloud displayed a striking iridescence, likely caused by sunlight diffracting through tiny water droplets or ice crystals. A distinct dark gap runs through the cloud, which gradually dissipated over several minutes. This feature suggests the influence of atmospheric wave activity, possibly generated by mountain waves, as Coyhaique is surrounded by mountainous terrain. Winds at the time were mild but variable (7 knots, gusting to 17 knots), and there was no visible aircraft activity to explain the cloud's structure. The combination of iridescence and the sharp division within the cloud made for a fascinating and rare atmospheric phenomenon.
