This image captures two rare atmospheric phenomena: an oval corona and a light pillar around Venus. Oval corona around Venus: This phenomenon occurs when the light from Venus is diffracted by non-spherical particles, such as plate- or column-shaped ice crystals, oriented horizontally in high-altitude clouds. This specific orientation causes a vertical elongation of the corona, giving it an oval shape. The observation of an oval corona around Venus is favored when the planet is low on the horizon, as in this condition, the atmosphere acts as a selective filter, enhancing the effect of the particle orientation. Such observations are rare and require particular atmospheric conditions, as Venus, being a point-like light source, needs particles of specific sizes and orientations to generate this type of optical phenomenon. Light pillars are more easily observed when Venus is low on the horizon, in the presence of a thin layer of cirrostratus clouds containing the ice crystals necessary for the reflection and refraction of light.
