Details:
Due to poor weather conditions we missed the peak of the auroral activity but the weather forecast did show the conditions would improve later. So my friend Mark hampton and I set out in the hope of another burst of activity once the skies had cleared. For a change the forecast was right and it did clear but there was no further major auroral activity, however even with the storm subsiding the aurora was still clearly visible on the camera. It was nice to see aurora (even if it was just on camera) on new years day. As it looked like the aurora was fading we decided to head back home but before we left Mark took a photo of a different area of the sky looking west and picked up a faint reddish band which we knew could not have been aurora, we thought it might be a Stable Auroral Red Arc. That was certainly seen by others and it's the only thing it could be. That makes it the first time I have observed a SAR arc (the aurora photos were taken on the 1st but it had gone midnight when we saw the SAR arc)
