Details:
Twas a great day for atmospheric optics in the Washington DC region as a high, thin layer of cirrostratus clouds variably overran the sky from dawn to dusk and beyond creating a day long cavalcade of ice crystal arcs, halos and other apparitions. Conditions persisted into the evening and the waning gibbous Moon provided the encore halo.
The list of observed phenomena included:
Common:
22 degree halo
22 degree parhelia “sundogs”
Circumzenithal arc
Not so common:
Parhelic circle
Upper Tangent arc
Parry arc
Rare:
Anthelion
Paranthelia (120 degree parhelia)
Camera for all photos was an iPhone 14 ProMax. All images were post processed with Photo Shop Express to reduce haze and emphasize the ice crystal phenomena.
If you see persistent contrails in a translucent blue sky, be on the lookout for these amazing displays.
