Details:
After multiple rainy and cloudy Aurora nights at our location in Virginia, we finally had a very crisp and clear night for the arrival of a powerful CME and resulting G4 geomagnetic storm. The ACE satellite showed the Bz suddenly drop to -40 nT, giving a little lead time to setup a camera and as twilight arrived around 7:30pm ET we could already see a beautiful, cherry red glow in the North. It brightened and shifted overhead with distinct pillars and also some green glow (which the camera saw better than we did), then to the South, and then quieted down for a bit, and then at 11pm ET it returned even stronger the same way it had come and then faded into the night. The GIF I am providing was of the 11pm ET outburst. Delighted to have experienced it after a 23-year personal hiatus, and so glad so many people got to see it! Fingers crossed there's more to come this solar cycle!
