Visual observation of the occultation of Saturn of this morning.
Less than half an hour after the phenomenon, some clouds veiled the scene, yet through the telescope the two could be seen very well. And when they moved away, the strong moonlight made it impossible to perceive it with the naked eye.
In the telescope at 285x, the view was magnificent: Saturn very sharp, much sharper than the rough edge of the Moon, and clear as well. Such a beautiful spectacle that I preferred to admire it visually until it disappeared, instead of filming it with my smartphone.
As the Moon approached, Saturn seemed to diminish in brightness due to the intense light of the almost full Moon still deep in the night. But its contours remained razor-sharp the whole time, even when the last side of the ring was rising perpendicularly behind the Moon.
After about an hour it appeared again on the other side, this time in the company of the craters, white and transparent in view of the blue sky of the day, directly from the shadowed side of the Moon. It was visible to both the finder and the telescope.
I followed it through the telescope until 4:47 UT, when by then also illuminated by the Sun, it appeared as a halo without detail near the Moon.
