"Looking for Aurora but got Jellyfish Sprites" Albany, Missouri July 30, 2024, 3:08 a.m. CDT I was out several times during the night looking for aurora from here in Northern Missouri. I did photograph some pinkish glows off and on throughout the night but no big Northern Lights displays. As the night progressed, some Severe Thunderstorms moved into Central and Southern Iowa about 60 miles North of Albany. This complex of thunderstorms was very active with lightning and Sprites which are very quick electrostatic discharges similar to lighting but occur high above the storms. I have seen them many times before but this display was intense. Dozens showed up on my cameras for about an hour but one, in particular, was the largest and brightest I had ever seen. Submitted here are the stills of that sprite event taken from a video that I was recording at the time. Sony A7iii with 24mm f/1.4 Lens ISO 25600 with 1/4 second exposure in HD Tripod Mounted.
