Details:
While this year's previous big NLC events produced only mid-level displays down here in Hungary, this morning I witnessed one of the biggest since I started my regular observations in 2018. Initially it started low on the NE horizon, and when it reached cca. 10 deg., I thought it will stop there. Then new patches started to appear higher, and they eventually spread all the way to the south (an extreme rarity at this latitude), at one point there was NLC all around the sky! The last bits disappeared at 4:30 local time, with the Sun being only 4 deg. below horizon. It was a memorable and special display, and also a very lucky one as the sky was completely clear allowing it to be observed in all its beauty. 1st. pic: with the initial display underway, new parts start to appear with a reddish edge... 2nd. pic: the clouds continue spreading, the reddish edge is still visible indicating it's not done yet... 3rd. pic: close-up (at 200 mm) of a bright, richly structured band on the northern sky... 4th pic. fisheye image facing south, all of those clouds are in the mesosphere...
