Details:
Noctilucent clouds are located at altitude of about 80 km. That means that at any time moment they appear similar to observers even some hundreds kilometers apart. If at least two observers take simultaneous photos of them at coordinated times, altitude and position of them can be determined. Latvian Astronomical Society (LAS) for the last 4 years is running a citizen science project during the NLC season – collecting and processing photos with NLCs taken at the same time in different locations of Latvia. Here is the example of photos from 5 observers located up to 400 km apart at 28th of June, 2024, 01:30 local time. I projected the position of the clouds to map, height of the clouds are approximately 82 km.
