An interesting followup to the “Big G5 Storm”. I have been trying to corollate and otherwise match up the various aurora forecast tools provided by the NOAA-SWPC and how they map onto what is actually seen in the field. I went to up Shenandoah NP Friday night and witnessed the extravaganza the world experienced. With hopes of more, I returned there Sunday knowing the forecast was declining in intensity as the day progressed. While I saw nothing visually, Sunday night, the trusty iPhone 14 ProMax pulled out the faint red glow taken at the exact same location on the northern horizon. I came home and looked at the screen saves of the SWPC tools from the same approximate times as the Friday and Sunday images. I realized I had the pieces of an interesting graphic to corroborate the tools with what was seen. It could be helpful for trying to see, ahead of time, what you might expect to observe outside. Not totally scientific, but seems to lay it out graphically. I wish the SWPC would provide better interpretive guidance in using those tools , wink wink!
