Details:
Been lucky enough to have seen aurora a few times without even having to leave my home county but mostly it has only been visible in photos, the first time I saw it was in 2003 and it was visible to the naked eye then but we did have to drive to a location with less light pollution. This night that was not the case, it was easily visible to the eye and although we did leave the town to escape the light pollution from a nearby industrial estate it was still Bortle 5 conditions.
Subtle hints of colour could be detected with the eye but of course in photos the true intensity of colours showed up, and what a colourful show it was.
I was amazed that not only was it visible at the zenith, but it was also detectable just above Spica, which at the time I took a image was 27° above the south western horizon, I still cannot believe I saw the northern lights in the south west from southern England!
We were so lucky that night for once every thing fell into place, the substorm occurring during the night, no clouds (and we have had quite a long spell of miserable weather) and hardly any moonlight, only a thin crescent moon which set fairly early so was never an issue. We were able to watch them from just over an hour after sunset until just over an hour until sunrise, the display varied in intensity but was always present when the rays were not visible there was still diffuse cloud like aurora. It did seem to drop off at some point and we were getting tired so we decided it was time to pack up and head home, of course as soon as the cameras were put away, it picked up again, but we were happy to just observe it visually, it gave us a bit of a boost to stay longer but soon the twilight was getting to bright so that was our cue to go home.
