Details:
After Friday night's dazzling displays, I went back out to watch the skies again on Saturday evening. I picked Blackrock Summit along the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah NP in order to avoid any crowds. For most of the night, there was barely a faint red glow, mostly washed out from nearby light pollution. Then, a little after midnight, I started to see an increase in the glow, so I started my intervalometer. From about 12:30 to 12:35 EDT, the handful of us on the summit were treated to a wild array of rapidly shifting naked-eye-visible columns of red light with a faint green glow below. That 5 minute and 15 second display was the only part of the night that was visible without the aid of a camera, but it hit with such intensity that it rivaled anything seen on Friday night.
