Details:
All previous auroral displays I've seen from the Southern California deserts have extended about 30-35 degrees above the northern horizon--far enough to reach Polaris (the north star). This one filled the entire northern half of the sky, extending far into the east and west, and extending up slightly past the overhead point (the zenith). Wow!!
I aimed my camera (with 14mm lens) directly overhead and captured the southernmost edge of the aurora between the Big Dipper and Leo. Enlarge the image to see all the details and annotations I've added.
I remarked to another photographer that was out there at the time that this display would be visible well into Mexico. Indeed, I just saw on Spaceweather.com a photo shot from the beach in Mazatlan!
