With a good aurora display looking like a sure bet, I made the drive to Devils Tower in Wyoming to experience a close encounter of my own kind. It took a while for the display to gain any real structure or motion, but once it did, it was an absolute explosion. I had to reposition to the north side of the tower so I could look at the auroras facing south... something I never thought I'd have to do living in the mid latitudes! The aurora were bright enough that I was able to hike the trail along the base of the tower without the aid of any flashlight or headlamp. At multiple times throughout the night, I recall hearing morning birds chirping, likely believing that the bright aurora were the onset of twilight. An unforgettable night! Canon 6D, Bower 14mm f/2.8, ISO 6400, 2s exposure
