Details:
I couldn't see anything (with the naked eye) around 10:30 p.m., but when I returned to our deck after 11 p.m., the show had begun. Columns of light were spread across the sky, zenith to horizon, even with the ambient light of Seattle to the north. My wife and I watched bands of green and magenta ascend, blend, brighten, and fade for an hour. Then I went to a small park on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, where I watched the auroras undulate, layer, and expand for another hour and a half. We traveled to Ohio to see the total eclipse (my third) in April, and I've observed all kinds of astronomical objects and phenomena... but never the northern lights. The display elicited a whole other level of astonishment.
