What a night! This is my first aurora borealis! Since I do solar astronomy I follow the Carrington-sized sunspot and knew of the G4 prediction, but didn't expect a G5! I went in Slovenian country to avoid city lights, 30 min from my home in Trieste (Italy), and hoped the best since the scattered clouds prediction. As soon as I arrived, at beginning of astronomical night, I noticed the sky at North fully red up to alt30, it lasted in visual 15 minutes. Around midnight began the real show, with the green part between clouds, visible as colorless or light blue but bright like a nautical twilight, including the fact that it raised the ambient light and lightened a bit the street - and the pillars (shivers!), visible as incolor but changing every few seconds, and high up to 70°, in a moment up to zenith. A friend of mine got some aurora photos even in the Trieste city. Unforgettable!
