Details:
After several days of cloudy skies, I was able to capture this image from the Urho Kekkonen National Park (northern Finland), an ideal place to observe aurora borealis in the middle of nature. The image shows at the top the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and below vertically the comet 12p/Pons-Brooks. The sky background is tinged with aurora borealis, green at the bottom (due to oxygen) and red at the top (caused by atmospheric nitrogen). I had to look for a clearing among the great density of trees to be able to capture the comet, because although the comet is circumpolar at these latitudes, its height with respect to the horizon is low. The photograph is a vertical panorama of three fields, each consisting of 4 images, to improve the final image quality. A short and bright telephoto lens (85 mm f/1.4) was used with a modified digital reflex camera (full visible spectrum) to better capture the reddish tones of the aurora. Each photograph was exposed for 5 s at ISO 3,200 on a static tripod. Subsequently, all the photographs were integrated to form the final image shown here. The ambient temperature was - 10ยบ C.
