62P/Tsuchinshan, which nowadays appears very close to the star Regulus in the constellation Leo, is a periodic comet with a short period of 6.2 years, discovered on January 1, 1965, at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanking, China. When it passes perihelion (closest position to the Sun) on December 25, 2023, its distance from the Sun will be 1,265 AU (189.7 million km.). Its current distance from Earth is 0.560 AU (84.0 million km.). Its latest reported brightness is magnitude 8.5 and its orbital velocity is 33.6 km/sec.
