Details:
Asteroid 319 Leona has a much anticipated rendezvous with Betelgeuse on Dec. 12, 2023 at 01:16 UT possibly visible from Mexico, South Florida, Europe and Middle East. Curious, I made a 2-hour gif animation of the asteroid Sunday morning (Nov. 19) and was shocked at the paltry sky motion of the asteroid covering only 37 arcseconds in 2 hours which is way too slow to make it to Betelgeuse 3.5 degrees away by Dec. 12th! Not to worry when I glanced at the IAU Minor Planet and Comet Ephemeris for 319 Leona showing a marked sky motion acceleration in the next several weeks! Now I guess the only question is will I make it to the centerline if it is onshore in Florida?!!
