Details:
I filmed the phenomenon both at dawn when the Moon and Venus were still 2 degrees apart, and just before sunrise under the red leaves of a maple tree, symbol of the autumn season. Shortly before noon, the Moon approached the planet until it occulted it within a few tens of seconds. Because of its strong surface brightness Venus is easily visible even in broad daylight, when as Galileo said it appears without its "mane". I followed and filmed the phenomenon together with my primary school alumns and together we observed and were amazed at how 'slow' the Moon appeared to be hiding the tiny planet that it seemed to be touching. A simple astronomical phenomenon, but one whose beauty is capable of raising many important questions: where are the stars during the day? How big and far away is the Moon? How fast is it? The two photos are single shots taken from Rome with a Nikon Coolpix p510 -with maple ISO1600 1/30s -in the dark ISO1600 1/3s The video of the occultation is visible here: http://www.unsaltonelcielo.it/congiunzione-ed-occultazione-lo-spettacolo-tra-luna-e-venere/
