Dopple image, taken with the Sol'Ex, showing Evershed effect ! The following description was recently written by Christian Buil, quote: "The Evershed effect was discovered in 1909 by the astronomer of the same name. It is the consequence of the tangential flow of matter outward from the penumbra of a sunspot by following its filaments. Due to the perspective, when the spot is located close to the limb, the effect results in a differential apparent speed from one edge of the spot to the other, detectable by the Doppler spectral shift of the lines. Thus the material on the edge of the spot located closest to the limb moves away from the observer, resulting in a red shift, while conversely, the material approaches the observer on the opposite edge. , resulting in a blue shift. The flow velocity is typically 1 km/s"
