Details:
While on a bicycle journey across Europe, I was camped on top of a mountain in Southern Albania in Fir of Hotova National Park. I woke up at 4AM to begin a day to night timelapse, and was absolutely shocked to see a vivid purple glow on the Northern Horizon in my test shot. Checking the data, I learned that a G3/G4 geomagnetic storm was indeed in progress. The timelapse showing faint beams confirms that this is indeed the Northern Lights.

I am quite certain that this is the first ever photographic recording of the Northern Lights in Albania, and likely the first and only recorded instance of them in the country at all. It was a geomagnetic storm to remember, with lights being sighted at record distances to the South. What a treat to capture this magical occurrence. This location is further South in latitude than Barcelona, Rome, or Istanbul. Location: 40.363ºN, 20.300ºE. Settings: Sony a7s3, 20mm, f/1.8, 8”, ISO6400
