I received an alert on my phone last night indicating auroral activity had ramped up and that they might be seen from my location. I quickly captured a shot of the northern sky to confirm and I was in awe. I grabbed my camera gear, headed north and west to a darker location, and outrun the advancing clouds. I guess this is what you call "Aurora Chasing."
The northern sky was brighter and more alive than I had seen in decades. At times pillars and curtains danced across the sky with some pillars reaching 50 degrees above the horizon. I've been able to image aurora in the past, but the last time I saw a display this active was during the October 2003 solar storm. This caught me entirely by surprise.
I was operating two Canon cameras: Canon 6D and 60Da, with Sigma and Canon lenses. ISO 1600, 15 to 20-second exposures, f/4.
