Details:
Comet ZTF was observed under perfect skies after moonset on the day of its closest approach to earth. Comet ZTF ion tail is significantly dimmer than yesterday while the broadening dust tail is oriented 90 degrees from it and appeared a bit more pronounced. The uncropped image at left was taken with a Nikon d7100, Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 @ f/2.8, exp 3x90s (integrated time of 4.5 minutes), iso 3200, fixed stars; the right image in the panel is an invert of the center without stars (45x90s or ~1.1 hours integrated time).
The naked eye visibility was hampered by a thick moisture atmosphere and sky brightness as mentioned above. I'd estimate the magnitude of the comet at +5.1 although I suspect it was a bit brighter as viewed under perfect skies. The left image was only 3 subs before comet drift became noticeable.
Bortle 4, sky transparency 10/10, temperature 37F, RH 74%, slight breeze. Orion Sirius EQ Mount used.
Remarks: This was my 13th out of 14th morning recording the comet. I missed 23 Jan due to clouds. This streak has to end in a day because of the full moon.
