Details:
I was going thru the cloudcam footage and found this light pillar. It was located directly over the location of the Kilauea volcano and there was some erupting lava activity. I checked the Volcanoes USGS website and there was indeed a summit eruption on Jan 27 2023. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hans2/view/notice/DOI-USGS-HVO-2023-01-27T10:58:47-08:00
This not the first time a light pillar is seen over Kilauea. Back on Feb 13, 2018 I found a light pillar in the same location but I thought it was from bright city lights. I later found out from the folks that work at the Gemini observatory that the bright light was actually the lava lake located at the summit of Kilauea. That means that the Gemini observatory cloudcam was not only the first to record a volcanic light pillar but also the longest lasting volcanic light pillar so far. The video will better show the volcanic activity and the on and off presence of the light pillar. Here is a link to the footage of both light pillars over Kilauea: https://youtu.be/5LWMDN_pIhA
