Details:
I've been doing astrophotography for over 50 years. In all that time of dealing with optical lens flares and various chromatic aberrations and comas creeping into the images, I've never had them become such magical figures.
The photo is a 1.6 second exposure of 54 Starlink satellites passing over my town of Cody Wyoming after they were launched by SpaceX the day before. This frame I composed on the fly , sweeping along with the satellite train , hoping to keep out the glare from an urban streetlight offcamera to the lower right . The streetlight does not show, but light from it hit the front surfaces of my ancient Nikkor 24mm 2.8 AIS manual focus lens anyway, and bounced around inside the lens, somehow refracting into brightly colored ovoids that might as well be spacehips. All I did in post processing was tweak the contrast to darken the background sky. The UFO's are in the original camera JPEG.
I included a frame from the intended series of the Starlink train passing over our apartment house. It was a nice bright pass of Starlinks.
Nikon D5300 dslr , old Nikkor 24mm 2.8 AIS lens , exposure 1.6 seconds at f/4.0 in both photos.
