Details:
Last night, from my position in the mid-Hudson Valley area, the planet Mars grazed along the limb of the full moon. Mars is particularly large in the sky right now because we are at our closest approach to the red planet. About 50 miles north of my position, the moon actually passed over Mars and obscured it but I like this contrast in size and color. Photographed frustratingly on a Fujifilm X-T5 with a 100-400mm lens and 1.4x teleconverter. I had several pain points in taking this shot. First, I use a ball head so locking in the right aim was very difficult at high magnifications. I'd much prefer a slow-motion mount or, ideally, a tracking mount but these are persistently outside my ability to afford. The second was that my long lens was pointed nearly straight up, which caused the lens to accordion back to an unzoomed position so easily that I had to lock the lens in the zoomed position with Gorilla Tape. Fuji should modify this lens so the lock button holds the lens in position at different extensions. Best viewed as full-screen as possible. Zoomed in, you can make out dark patches on Mars, rough surface detail!
