Details:
On Wednesday 1st June the Young 4% illuminated Crescent Moon was observed appearing at 5.35 pm and then setting in another spectacular volcanic sunset display as shown in the accompanying mosaic, still images, and time-lapse animation. The display was so bright that the Moon was at first difficult to see but it became clearer as the light faded with Earthshine becoming visible as it set behind the summit of Transmitter Hill shortly after 6 pm. Volcanic sunsets (and sunrises) have become almost daily events due to the more widespread and uniform distribution of aerosols in the stratosphere from the massive Hunga-Tonga eruption in January. Camera: Hand-held and tripod-mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 in sunset and manual exposure modes with up to x60 zoom magnification. The time-lapse animation of the Crescent Moon setting behind Transmitter Hill was compiled from 80 x 1 second manual exposures at 800 ASA . The light was too low to record video.
