Details:
One of the greatest assets of the Spaceweather Realtime Image Gallery is the ability to present animated GIF’s at three levels ie: thumbnail, page post display and full image. However from time-to-time the engine which converts uploaded GIF’s to thumbnails and page post displays corrupts files resulting in unwanted artefacts and/or unacceptable noise appearing as happened in my May 3rd 'Young Crescent Moon Setting’ post id=184531. This is disappointing as it emaciates the results of laborious post-processing. It is not known whether the errors are random or caused by physical characteristics of the GIF’s such as dimensions, aspect ratio, frame numbers, display rates or file sizes and/or whether they have been derived from still images or extracted video frames. The accompanying 4 test GIF’s consist of 10 x 1-second 800 x 600 pixel displays of the setting Moon derived from GIF 1 : a 10 second MP4 time-lapse video generated from stills using windows-movie-maker-2016 and uploaded to https://ezgif.com/video-to-gif , GIF 2 : 10 original still images directly uploaded to https://ezgif.com/maker , GIF 3 : 10 frames extracted from the above MP4 video and converted to GIF by Video Snapshot Wizard (VSW) from http://www.video-snapshot.com/ , GIF 4 : 10 still images directly imported to the captured frame section of VSW and converted to GIF. GIF 1 is the same as that which displayed incorrectly in upload id=184531. It will be interesting to see whether this and/or the three others display correctly. Unfortunately when posts containing GIF’s are submitted, the preview page does not display the GIF’s so it is not possible to predict how they will appear. As this problem has been affecting other users it would be useful to know why and if there are preferred dimensions, file sizes and other attributes for GIF submissions to the gallery?
