I'm pleased to share with you a very special image.
Yesterday, 16 Dec., we are celebrating in Italy the 1st National Space Day, promoted by the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (Italian Space Agency).
Several events were scheduled to bring to our national community the importance of space and science for Italy, which has a very important tradition and role in those fields.
One of these events involved a legendary place in Rome: the Colosseum. It is one of the most important and known monuments worldwide and it offered the possibility to connect the immense cultural value and heritage of such a celebrated masterpiece with the modern idea of space and its challenges.
In particular, a precious cooperation between the "Parco archeologico del Colosseo" (the Institution taking care some of the most important monuments in Rome, including the Colosseum) and the "Virtual Telescope Project" (the leading facility bringing the real-time universe to people worldwide) made possible to organize a unique imaging session to capture the symbol of the human presence in space, the International Space Station, transiting above the Colosseum, an icon of human history, art and culture. We believe that such a bridge between past and future has a very special value on this day, especially among the young generation.
On 6 Dec. 2021, we could capture one the of the most spectacular transits of the ISS above the monument, with the satellite passing EXACTLY overhead (zenith). Looking at the starry sky, with those thousand-year-old walls embracing the ancient constellations and the passing, modern ISS, was undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We are excited to bring this unique view and opportunity to the community worldwide.
I'm happy to share with you this extraordinary image I had the privilege to capture.
Thank you very much for your attention.
Sincerely
Gianluca Masi
