Details:
We don't need solar wind to see bright and fast northern lights in Utsjoki! All afternoon and evening, the Bz was at a consistent negative value. Despite a very slow solar wind (less than 300 km/s) and a low density, after hours of waiting, and just before the Bz took a sharp turn to positive values, an intense overhead show happened! We even witnessed a purple nitrogen fringe for a short while! What an exciting and cold (-28°C / -19°F) in Utsjoki in the far north of Finnish lapland!
