Details:
Tonight I was guiding a group of 7 guests who hoped to see the northern lights. We were lucky with a very clear sky and a crispy -23°C / -9°F right when we started at 7 PM (local time), but unfortunately the northern lights did not show themselves. With a positive Bz and otherwise weak conditions, our prospects were not that great. However, around midnight local time, Bz turned to (slightly) negative values, so I knew we had to persevere with our group. And oh was I right! At 0:20 AM a glow to the northwest that was visible to the naked eye appeared, and quickly developed into bright auroras that even moved fast for a few minutes! I managed to take nice pictures of our guests, and ran down to the water/ice level of the Teno River to take a few extra pictures that show our beautiful frosty landscapes. Another very successful night in Utsjoki, Finnish Lapland, at 70°N of latitude!
