Details:
18 years ago today, another severe geomagnetic storm of what was then the 23rd sunspot cycle occurred. It triggered enormous northern lights (aurora borealis) over Europe, which enabled sightings as far as the Turkish Riviera and Tenerife! The compilation shows photos on my part from Landberg hill near Herzogswalde, 17 km southwest of Dresden. The bottom row shows red beamers far to the northeast (left and right). The picture in the middle was taken towards the west, at 260 degrees azimuth! In the north, the green aurora oval shone with enormous brightness. The trigger was a not so strong M4.5 flare on the sun. So it doesn't always have to be X ... 😉. Other framework conditions are often more decisive!
It was a G4 storm with a DST index of -422 nT and a Bz value of -53.1 nT. The KP index was 9!
