Details:
The red auroras are back! Last year around the same time (October and November), we had a profusion of red northern lights up here in Utsjoki in Finnish Lapland.
Tonight they made another appearance in quite the same conditions: slow solar wind speed, positive Bz and low density. This was a night when we would normally not expect anything to happen, and yet for most of the night we had a green band in the sky with red on top. And the bright waning moon didn't even spoil the show.
Just to be clear: the red only appeared as a pale milky shape to the naked eye, and only a long exposure in camera revealed the colour.
